ACT-Sponsored Skilled Migration Visa Program To Reopen – COVID-19 Update
Applications for the ACT-Sponsored skilled migration visa program are set to re-open this month, months after the program was closed to give the ACT government time to contain Coronavirus outbreak in the territory.
Following the lead of other states such as Victoria, the ACT government finally announced that the skilled visa nomination program 2021 will commence this month, with no changes in the eligibility criteria and the matrix storing criteria.
Like other states and territories, the ACT can nominate potential migrants, giving the chance to bring in skilled migrants who show a commitment to staying in the territory as permanent residents through the ACT-Sponsored skilled migration visa.
Here are key points of the temporary changes to the ACT-Skilled migration visa program:
- The ACT Critical list was review and updated on 11 January 2020, to ensure that the migration programs adapt and respond to the changing essential skills needs of the act of the ACT economy;
- Canberra Matrix is closed for overseas applicants;
- The first 2021 Matrix invitation round will take place on Friday 15th January 2021.

2020-2021 Ranking and Selection Process
Although, there are no changes to the eligibility requirement or ACT nomination and the Matrix scoring criteria. In order to have the greatest chance of success, it is crucial for the application of the ACT-Sponsored Skilled migration visa to be precise and to be attentive of the ranking and selection process.
The ACT government has announced as a part of the 2020-2021 selection process that only Matrix with a nominated occupation matrix on the ACT essential skills list January 2021 will be chosen and, if ranked, invited to apply for an ACT nomination.
Your matrix will not be selected if your nominated occupation was eliminated from the ACT Critical Skill list January 2021. The ACT government has ONE ACT Nomination policy, given the small number of nominations available.
An invitation may not be granted, if you have already been nominated by the ACT or if you have an active invitation.
Additionally, for 457/482 holders who have a Matrix Score above 60 points will be considered to be invited to apply for ACT -Sponsored skilled migration visa nomination.
This good news will open up more opportunities for you who want to obtain Permanent Residence, as the government just allocated 598 places for Skilled Work Regional (subclass 491) visa and 702 places Skilled Nominated (subclass 190) visa.
With this good news, pack your bag and get ready to work in ACT!
