Your Guide to ANMAC Full Skills Assessment: The First Step for Nurses Migrating to Australia
Are you a registered nurse with a dream of living and working in Australia? Before you can embark on your journey, you need to pass a crucial checkpoint: The ANMAC Full Skills Assessment.
From 1 July 2025, the ANMAC Full Skills Assessment program has opened its doors wider, making the assessment process more accessible and transparent for internationally trained nurses and midwives.
In this article, we’ll break down what it is, who needs it, the requirements, and why getting it right the first time can make your Australian migration journey.
Why do nurses need an ANMAC Skills Assessment?
The ANMAC (Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council) is the authority responsible for assessing the skills of internationally qualified nurses and midwives who wish to migrate to Australia under the GSM (General Skilled Migration) and Employer-Sponsored Scheme programs.
So, if you’re planning to apply for visas like the Subclass 189, 190, 491, 482, 186, 187, or 494 you’ll need a positive skills assessment from ANMAC to be eligible.
What is the ANMAC Full Skills Assessment?
The Full Skills Assessment validates your qualifications and experience as a registered nurse or midwife for Skilled Migration under Australia’s General Skilled Migration (GSM) and Employer-Sponsored Scheme programs. It confirms that your credentials, English ability, registration status, and work experience meet Australian standards.

Who is eligible for the ANMAC Full Skills Assessment program?
As of 1 July 2025, ANMAC has expanded the eligibility criteria for the Full Skills Assessment program. You can apply if:
- You hold a nursing qualification from Canada, Hong Kong, Ireland, the UK, the US, Singapore, or Spain, and
- You are currently or previously registered as a nurse in one of these countries
If your qualification is not a Bachelor of Nursing from one of those countries, you must have:
- Completed a general nursing degree after 1 January 2017,
- Passed a regulatory exam in one of those countries (where applicable), and
- Have at least 1,800 hours of paid work as a Registered Nurse since 1 January 2017
Similar eligibility applies to midwives, only that you must have a recognised midwifery degree and registration.
Step-by-Step assessment process by ANMAC
ANMAC estimates that the whole online application process takes around 25 minutes, excluding document preparation. Here’s the detail:
- Check your eligibility

Upon approval, you will receive an Outcome Letter, a document of immense value. This letter, valid for 2 years, will list your ANZSCO Code and validated credentials, serving as a testament to your skills and experience.

What happens after you apply?
ANMAC will review your documents against the assessment criteria. If they miss or need more documents, they will contact you. Please note that the application will be delayed if your papers don’t meet the quality standards.

Why does it matter?
Skills Assessment with ANMAC is essential for your Skilled Visa application. You can’t lodge a Skilled Visa, either subclass visa 189, 190, or 491, without a positive Skills Assessment.
Additionally, the Skills Assessment helps in determining your eligible occupation and the pathways that suit it. It also provides credibility and confidence in your migration journey.
Things to avoid for a successful Skills Assessment result
Here are some things you must avoid to get a positive Skills Assessment with ANMAC:
- Poor-quality scans (must be 600 dpi, colour, in PDF format)
- Using free email for registration docs (must be from government or registration board accounts)
- Not meeting the English test requirements
- Omitting work experience or mismatched ANZSCO codes
The ANMAC Full Skills Assessment is an important but navigable milestone on your journey to a fulfilling nursing career in Australia. With clear eligibility, well-prepared documents, and awareness of timelines and fees, you can achieve a smooth and successful outcome.
