COVID-19 UPDATE: Travel Bubble with Singapore in Sight
On Thursday, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison will meet with Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong to discuss a potential air travel bubble with Australia. Both PMs said a sensible first step was to work on mutual recognition of health and vaccination certificates to allow normal travel between the two countries to smoothly resume soon.
Australia and Singapore Travel Bubble
The Australian and Singapore governments have been negotiating a travel bubble between the two countries, after a year of a travel ban. “Singapore is the first country outside of New Zealand that Australia wishes to engage in travel with and we want to get it right,” Morrison said.
With its vaccine rollout well underway, restrictions easing, and fast test kits due to be on sale to the public in pharmacies, Singapore has only registered four local COVID-19 cases per day on average over the past week. In that case, Mr Morrison stated that procedures will be put in place to allow the two nations to open up similarly to the Australia-New Zealand bubble “when we are both in a position to do so.”

What does Australia and Singapore travel bubble mean for you?
The deal could see Singapore act as an intermediary country for those looking to reach Australia, aiding in the return of stranded temporary visa holders. Additionally, with this ambitious Australia and Singapore travel bubble plan, we may see the return of international students as Morison said that Students would get priority when the bubble is established.

When does the travel bubble come into effect?
There is no exact date on when this arrangement will come into effect. However, Mr. Morisson stated that the travel arrangement between Australia and Singapore can eventually resume “sooner rather than later”. To do so, both countries will need to create the infrastructure and processes, which will begin with mutual recognition of immunization certificates, maybe in a digital form.
