New Face For Australia International Border: DPD (Digital Passenger Declaration) Will Come In Effect
Australia international border will have a new face soon! Currently, the Australian Federal Government is preparing a new Australian digital vaccine passport called the Digital Passenger Declaration (DPD). The Australian Federal Government announced that they had selected Accenture to build the technology.
What is DPD, and how does it work?
Digital Passenger Declaration, the new face for Australia International Border
Digital Passenger Declaration (DPD) was previously in talks regarding the plan to open the Australia international border. In May 2021, the Australian Federal Government mentioned the possibility of using a pre-check-in digital declaration to check travellers’ vaccine passports.
Currently, Australians use either a digital or paper certificate to show their COVID-19 vaccination status. In line with the previous announcement in May 2021, the Australian Federal Government plans to replace the physical incoming passenger cards and the COVID-19 Australian Travel Declaration with the Digital Passenger Declaration.

How does Digital Passenger Declaration work?
The Digital Passenger Declaration (DPD) Australia will link with the QR code of a vaccination certificate. The Digital Passenger Declaration Australia will also capture essential information up to 72 hours before a person boards a plane. In that way, the Digital Passenger Declaration Australia will support the safe re-opening of the Australia international border.
The Digital Passenger Declaration will provide the capacity to collect, verify and share any Australian Government approved and digitally verified documents, including travel, health and vaccine status information of international travellers, with the State and Territory public health authorities.

DPD Australia is expected to come into effect soon
Accenture is still working on the Digital Passenger Declaration along with the Australian Federal Government. The Digital Passenger Declaration will undergo testing before it is applied at major Australian airports as support for the reopening of the Australia international border.
The Australian Federal Government has not put a definite timeline of when the DPD will be rolled out.
Once the Digital Passenger Declaration is rolled out, the Australian Federal Government plans to use the same technology the DPD is based on to deliver a suite of digital upgrades to other government services. It might include visas, import permits, personnel identity cards, licences, registrations and other documents, hoping to make the process easier, safer and more transparent.

What does it mean for you?
Should the Digital Passenger Declaration come into effect, it means once the Australia international border is opened, you would not need to fill in any paper-based incoming passenger cards or the COVID-19 Australian Travel Declaration. Additionally, the use of the Digital Passenger Declaration is possibly helping to mitigate the risks posed by the use of fake vaccination certificates.
