Table Points for Australian PR through Skilled Migration Visa (189, 190, 491 Visa)
If you are looking at the 189, 190, or 491 visa, you’ve probably heard the number “65”. While 65 is the legal minimum to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI), in 2026, it is rarely enough to secure an invitation.
Most successful skilled visa applicants in 2026 sit at 85 to 95 points or higher. The gap between the minimum points and what actually works is what costs migrants time and money.
Before you start gathering documents, it’s best to understand how you can collect your points and the best strategy to improve your chances of obtaining an invitation.
Understanding the Points Test
Australia’s Skilled Migration program uses a points test to assess your eligibility. You must score at least 65 points to be invited to apply for a 189 Visa, 190 Visa, or 491 Visa. Below is the points table:
| No | Point Criteria Category | Maximum points possible |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Age | 30 |
| 2 | English language proficiency | 20 |
| 3 | Employment outside of Australia | 15 |
| 4 | Employment inside of Australia | 20 |
| 5 | Educational qualifications | 20 |
| 6 | Australian educational qualifications | 5 |
| 7 | Specialist education qualification | 5 |
| 8 | Partner status/skills | 10 |
| 9 | State Nomination | 5-15 |
| 10 | Regional study | 5 |

Since many applicants now score well over 65, focusing on extra points can significantly improve your likelihood of invitation. This means that even if you’re not at the top of the points scale, there’s still a lot of room for improvement, giving you hope and motivation to work towards your Australian PR dream.
1. Age Points Category for Australian PR
Candidates aged 25 to 32 receive the highest points. Meanwhile, candidates over 45 will receive no points.

The earlier you apply, the more points you can secure, emphasising the urgency and importance of timing in your application process.
