Australian Citizenship Application Update for November 2021

On 18 October 2021, the Australian Federal Government announced changes for Australian citizenship applications. The changes will commence on 01 November 2021. The changes will apply to Australian citizenship by descent, Australian citizenship by conferral and evidence of Australian citizenship (applying for citizenship certificate).

What are the changes?

Changes for Citizenship by Descent and Citizenship Certificate

Starting from 01 November 2021, you can lodge the citizenship by descent and evidence of Australian citizenship application through the Department of Home Affairs’ online system, ImmiAccount. Hence, the paper application forms for these applications will no longer be available on the Department’s website.

However, suppose the applicants or the providers of lawful immigration assistance experience significant barriers in applying online, in that case, they can still apply through paper-based, and the paper application forms will be available for download on the Department’s website until 31 October 2021. The Department will also consider individual requests for a paper application form on a case-by-case basis.

Changes for Citizenship by Descent and Citizenship Certificate

Changes for Citizenship by Conferral

There are no specific changes for citizenship by conferral application. The paper application forms for citizenship by conferral application will remain in place. However, the Department suggests you lodge online citizenship by conferral application through ImmiAccount wherever possible.

Citizenship application by adoption, renunciation or resumption will remain the same. You can make these applications through a paper application form.
