Australian Parent Visa
The parent visas are for PR or citizens to bring their biological, legal (including adoptive) parent, step-parent or parent in-law to Australia on either a permanent or temporary basis. There are 7 subclasses of parent visa. The parent visas of Australia can accrue large application fees and be a time consuming process, some of the longest processing times of any visa, so it is best you weigh all your options and decide which is best for your situation.
Categories of Australian Parent Visa
The parent visas are split into 3 different types: contributory, non-contributory and temporary sponsored. The contributory offer permanent residence, have higher fees but quicker processing then non-contributory, non-contributory have longer processing times but a much lower fee then contributory visas and also offer permanent residence.
The Temporary sponsored parent visa does not have a pathway to permanent residence but has the quickest processing time of the parent visas and can be extended for a total of 10 years, another plus of this visa is it does not have the balance of family test requirement.

Contributory Parent Visas
The contributory offer permanent residence which will give access to Medicare and eventual citizenship. The Contributory Parent visas have higher fees but quicker processing than non-contributory.

Subclass 143 – Offshore and Onshore
This visa is for parents of a settled Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident of Australia or eligible New Zealand citizen to move to Australia permanently.

- Be outside Australia at the time of application and decision.
- Have an eligible child who is a settled Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen.
- Meet the balance-of-family test.
- Have an Assurance of Support.
- Not have a Sponsored Parent (Temporary) (Subclass 870) visa when applying for this visa.
Subclass 173 – Offshore and Onshore
This visa is for parents of a settled Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident of Australia or eligible New Zealand citizen to move to Australia temporarily. This visa allows you to stay in Australia for up to 2 years.

- Have an eligible child who is a settled Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen.
- Meet the balance-of-family test.
- Not have a Sponsored Parent (Temporary) (Subclass 870) visa when applying for this visa.
Subclass 884 – Onshore
This visa is for aged parents of a settled Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident of Australia or eligible New Zealand citizen to move to Australia temporarily. This visa allows you to stay in Australia for up to 2 years.

- Have an eligible child who is a settled Australian citizen, an Australian permanent resident or an eligible New Zealand citizen.
- Be old enough to receive the Australian aged pension (minimum of 65 years old).
- Be in Australia, but not in immigration clearance, at the time of application and decision.
- Not have a Sponsored Parent (Temporary) (Subclass 870) visa when applying for this visa.
Subclass 864 – Onshore
864 Visa or Contributory Aged Parent Visa is one of Australia’s permanent parent visas. This visa allows the aging parent to live, stay and work in Australia for a lifetime while receiving Medicare and traveling with no restrictions.
Subclass 864 Visa Key Information for 2023
- You must have a child that is an Australian citizen or Australian Permanent Resident or eligible New Zealand citizen, and has stayed in the country for 2 years.
- You are old enough to receive a pension in Australia (65-66 years; based on their years of birth) this pension age will gradually change every July in a year.
- This visa is unavailable for you who have already applied for a temporary sponsored parent visa or visa 870 in Australia.
- You can intend to be sponsored by a non-sponsored Permanent Parent Visa.
Non-Contributory Parent Visas
The Non-Contributory offer permanent residence which will give access to Medicare and eventual citizenship. Non-contributory visas have longer processing times but a much lower application fee then contributory parent visas.

Subclass 870 – Offshore
This visa is for parents of a settled Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident of Australia or eligible New Zealand citizen to move to Australia temporarily. This visa allows you to stay in Australia for 3 or 5 years.

- Be the biological, legal (including adoptive) parent, step-parent, or parent-in-law of the Parent Sponsor.
- Have an approved Parent Sponsor before you can lodge an application for this visa.
- Lodge your visa application within 6 months of the sponsorship approval, or 60 days if you are given Permission to Apply in Australia.
Australian Child Visa
The Child visas are for the children, whether biological, step or adopted, of Australian citizens or permanent residence. They can be applied for onshore or offshore and specially for adoption. All visa subclasses offer permanent residence. Note that these visas apply to children under 18 and in some cases under 25 years old.

Subclass 102

Child Visa Onshore
The Child visas are for the children, whether biological, step or adopted, of Australian citizens or permanent residence. They can be applied for onshore or offshore and specially for adoption. Subclass 445
445 visa aims for your children to live, work and study in Australia temporarily. It is for them to wait for you as their parent to get a permanent partner visa. The child is able to travel with legal consent into Australia to stay with the parents.
Subclass 445 Visa Key Information for 2023
- Your child is eligible if you are a holder of Australian Temporary Partner Visa (subclass 309 or subclass 820)
- Your child should be below 18 years old or between 18 and 25 to stay in Australia.
- Your child must meet health and character requirements,
- Your child must be physically and financially dependent on you as their parent.
- Your child at least is your responsibility and sponsor.
Remaining Relative Visa (Subclass 115)
This visa is for the relative of a settled Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident of Australia or eligible New Zealand citizen to move to Australia permanently. You must be sponsored by an eligible parent or step-parent, sibling or step-sibling, or an eligible partner of your relative and have no other close relatives.
115 Visa Basic Eligibility
- Be outside Australia by the time of application and decision.
- Be a remaining relative of an Australian citizen or Permanent resident or an eligible New Zealand citizen.
- Have an eligible sponsor.
461 Visa – New Zealand Citizen Family Relationship (Temporary)
461 visa is also known as New Zealand Citizen Family Relationship (Temporary). This visa allows you to study, work and live in Australia temporarily for 5 years. To be eligible, you must be a partner or a related family member of a New Zealand citizen who lives in Australia.
461 Visa Basic Eligibility
- You are not a citizen of Australia or New Zealand.
- Meet Australia’s health and character requirements
- Have your own health insurance (as you will not be eligible for Medicare or government healthcare in Australia on a temporary visa).
- If you are under the age of 18, make sure that the immigration to the country is in your best interests.
- If a previous visa holder, ensure that your visa does not have a ‘no further stay’ restriction.
