On the 18th March, 2015, Assistant Minister Cash following recommendations from the 457 Integrity Review announced changes to the 457 visa.
The changes that the Government have now implemented for 457 English Requirement are the following:
-
The list of English Language providers has expanded, now the list will include:
-
English as a Foreign Language – based test (TOEFL IBT)
-
Pearson Test of English (PTE)
-
Cambridge English Advanced (CAE) – conducted on or after 1st January, 2015
-
Minimum scores of each component of the English Test (reading, writing, speaking and listening) will now be accepted as an overall test score.
-
You will no longer have to show proof of five years consecutive secondary or tertiary study in English, if you can provide evidence of five cumulative years of study in English at the secondary or tertiary level you will be granted an exemption.
-
Once the date of approval for the 457 visa has commenced the term of the standard business sponsorship has been extended to 5 years.
-
For start-up businesses the sponsorship period has been extended from twelve (12) months to eighteen (18) months.
-
The market salary exemption threshold of $250,000 has now fallen in line with the marginal tax rate of $180,000.
-
The 10 working days for the notifiable period for sponsors has now been extended to 28 calendar days.
These changes made by the Government will reduce restrictions and increase flexibility for all 457 visa applicants.
Changing to an average test score for the English Language requirements will not diminish the English language standards for 457 visa holders but will be of great benefit for applicants and sponsors, this will allow 457 visa applicants to be able to score higher marks on test competencies that may be required their jobs and daily lives whilst living in Australia.
