General Skilled Migration is a program that allows skilled applicants to migrate and work in Australia temporarily or even permanently. This visa program is point tested, which means applicants must satisfy the minimum point requirement. Skilled applicants are able to apply for this skilled migration visa program by independent, state/territory sponsorship, or eligible relative’s sponsorship. This means you don’t not have to have an employer already set up to sponsor you, in fact in some cases you don’t not even need an existing job offer.
Skilled workers around the world whose occupation and education are registered in the skilled occupation list are welcomed to apply for this visa program.
The General Skilled Migration program has three different visa subclasses. These visa subclasses have different criteria and requirements.

Different Types of General Skilled Visa Australia
There are 3 different types of Australian General Skilled Migration visas that you are able to apply for.
Below are the three different types of Australia General Skilled Migration that you need to know if you are interested in migrating and working in Australia.
Types of Australian General Skilled Migration visa that currently available:
Permanent Visa
A unique aspect of the Permanent GSM visa is that the pathway can begin at this visa so it is possible for an offshore applicant to immediately become PR if this visa is granted. The benefits include access to Medicare and eventually applying for citizenship.
Subclass 189
Subclass 189 Visa is a permanent visa that allows skilled migrants and New Zealand Citizen to work and live anywhere in Australia indefinitely.
Subclass 189 Visa is offered through a point tested basis and you don’t need a sponsor to apply for this visa.
- You must have an occupation on the relevant skilled list.
- You must have a positive skills assessment for the occupation.
- You must be able to score a minimum of 65 points.
- You must be no more than 45 years of age.
- You must show a proficient English ability.
- You must be invited to apply for this visa by the Australian government.
Subclass 190
Subclass 190 visa is a permanent visa that allows nominated skilled workers to live and work in Australia indefinitely in a certain state/territory.
This visa requires you to be nominated by an Australian state/territory government.
- You must have an occupation on the relevant skilled list.
- You must have a positive skills assessment for the occupation.
- You must be able to score a minimum of 65 points.
- You must be no more than 45 years of age.
- You must show a proficient English ability.
- You must be invited to apply for this visa by the Australian state/territory government agency.
Subclass 191
Permanent Residence (Skilled Regional) Visa 191 allows a worker who has lived and worked in a designated regional area in Australia while holding an eligible visa or olds a specific country’s passport to get a chance to stay in the country permanently.
Visa 191 has two streams: the Regional Provisional Stream and Hong Kong Stream.
- You must be the previous holder of an eligible visa in Australia and have a stable income in the household for at least three years.
- Available for Hong Kong and British National passport holders.
- You must meet specific visa requirements, including character and health standard requirements.
Temporary Visa
Although The subclass 491 visa is temporary it can offer you a clear pathway to PR if you have not met the requirements to apply directly for the 189 or 190 visas directly.
Subclass 491
Subclass 491 is a temporary visa that allows skilled migrants to work, live, and study in a designated regional area of Australia for 5 years.
This visa requires you to be nominated by an Australian state or territory government agency or indicate that you will be sponsored by an eligible relative.

- You must have a positive skills assessment for the occupation.
- You must be able to score a minimum of 65 points.
- You must be no more than 45 years of age.
