Today we received news that a new Sponsored Parent (Temporary) Visa subclass 870 has taken place since 1 March 2019. If your parents are eligible it might benefit them in so many ways.
This visa can be the answer for the parents of Australian Permanent Residents or citizens to visit their children or grandchildren temporarily. There has been many weights put in the lengthy waiting time for Parent visas and the fact that taxpayers have to cover the additional costs, Australian government has now given us a solution that maybe a better option for those parents.
As mentioned above, to be eligible for this visa a parent must be the biological, adoptive, or step-parent of the sponsor, who must be an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen. This visa will be intended to open from 1 July 2019 for public, however sponsorship applications will open a little earlier, 17 April 2019.
There is a limited number of this visa subclass that the Australian government will grant. Each program year (from 1 July to end of June) only up to 15,000 applications will be granted. This capping was set to allow other visas for children, partner of Australians, as well as young skilled migrants to be able to have the same chance to migrate to Australia.
The Department of Home Affairs mentioned in their website, “If the cap is reached in a program year, no further visas will be granted until the next program year commences on 1 July.”
Now if you are one of the lucky people to have this visa, it will allow you to stay temporarily in Australia for up to 5 years without departing, unlike the Visitor visas for parents which only allow the holders to stay for a shorter period of time.
With that benefit in hand, the people who have lived separately from their parents can now reunite with them again in Australia for a longer period of time and live their lives just like when they lived together before. This might be the best news for you and your parents at home!
While there are other Parent visas that your parents might be eligible for, they can choose to apply for this visa first and then apply Permanent Parent visa later on. This new visa subclass does not change the current Visitor visas for Parents nor other Parent visas subclasses. Each visa will have different eligibility criteria, different processing times and different fees as well. It is now up to the applicant to decide which visa is suitable for them.
Though this visa subclass promises you a longer stay period, this visa is still a temporary visa and will not make the holder as Permanent Residence. If they would like to live in Australia permanently, they will have to look for options for Permanent Parent visas and see which one they are eligible for.
To close off this amazing news from the Department of Home Affairs, there are many benefits that lies behind this visa subclass that you may want to explore more. The fact that this visa has a very limited capping, we advise you to start your journey as soon as possible so your parents will not miss the chance to be able to spend time with you in Australia.
