As of 16 October 2021, the Australian Government has updated the definition of the immediate family member on travel exemption Australia on its official website. A parent of an adult Australian is considered as an immediate family member starting from 01 November 2021.
As a result of this, you will be considered as an immediate family member of Australian citizens or permanent residents, if you are:
- A spouse;
- A de facto partner;
- A dependent child;
- A legal guardian;
- A parent of an adult Australian (available from 1 November 2021).

Condition for Parents of Australian to Travel as Immediate Family Member
Along with this great news, the Australian Government emphasized that parents can travel to Australian states or territories as an immediate family member if the states or territories have reached the 80% Covid-19 vaccination rate. Looking at the current situation where 78.8% of New South Wales’ citizens have been fully vaccinated, Sydney might be the first place to be visited by parents of Australians on 01 November 2021.
Additionally, if the Australian’s parents are fully vaccinated, they will not be required to complete a hotel quarantine which takes 14 days.
