The skilled Migration Visa Australia is a gateway to a promising future, allowing skilled migrants to live and work in Australia permanently. It is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to get a direct permanent residency with Visa 189 and Visa 190. So, we are here to guide you on the application process and what you must prepare before submitting the Skilled Migration Visa Australia!

What are the requirements for Visa 189 and Visa 190?

Visa 189 is for skilled workers who are not sponsored by an Australian company, family member, or state or territory government. It is a permanent visa with points system. To be eligible for the Visa 189, you must:

  • receive at least 65 points on the point assessment,
  • be under 45 years old,
  • have a positive Skills Assessment,
  • have at least Competent English proficiency,
  • meet the health and character requirements.

You will have 60 days from the invitation date to apply for the Visa 189. By holding the Visa 189, you can live, work and study in Australia permanently with your accompanying family members.

Meanwhile, Visa 190 is for skilled workers who are nominated by an Australian state or territory government. The Visa 190 is a permanent visa with points system. To be eligible for the Visa 190, you must:

  • be nominated by an Australian state or territory government,
  • receive a minimum of 65 points,
  • be under 45 years old,
  • have a positive Skills Assessment,
  • have at least Competent English proficiency,
  • meet the health and character requirements.

You must submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) and receive an invitation to apply for this visa.

How do I get the 65 points for a Skilled Migration Visa?

As mentioned earlier, Visa 189 and Visa 190 are point test based visa for Australia. To be eligible for Visa 189 or Visa 190, you must receive a minimum of 65 points. This point is assessed through an Expression of Interest (EOI) application, a process we will guide you through to ensure you are well-prepared.

You must lodge an Expression of Interest (EOI) before applying for the skilled migration visa to Australia. An Expression of Interest (EOI) application differs from a visa application. Through the Expression of Interest (EOI) application, the Department will assess your background, including your age, work experience, educational background, English competency, marital status, etc.; a minimum of 65 points will be counted from these aspects.

Before you can lodge an EOI, you must complete a skill assessment based on your nominated occupation’s relevant skill assessment authority.

You must lodge an EOI application through SkillSelect.

What Happens After Meeting the Points Minimum?

It’s important to note that the 65 points are just the pass mark. Depending on your occupation, you may need more than 65 points to receive the invitation. Typically, highly skilled occupations like accounting, engineering, and ICT specialist require more than 65 points for an invitation.

So, you must gain as many points as possible since you will be competing with other potential migrants. You must also note that each state has different priorities. The more applicants look for the nomination, the more fierce the “competition” is. Hence, the bigger your points total, the better your chance to be invited for one of this point test visa in Australia.

Once you’ve passed the minimum points for a Skilled Migration visa, you will receive an invitation to apply for Visa 189 or Visa 190. You must submit the visa application within 60 days after the invitation date.

What is the difference between Visa 189 and Visa 190?

Visa 189 and Visa 190 are both point based visa for Australia, but they have a slight difference that you must acknowledge:

  • Visa 189 is an independent point-tested skilled working visa. Meanwhile, Visa 190 is a point-tested skilled working visa nominated by the Australian state/territory government. So, if you want to apply for visa 190, you must get an invitation and nomination from the Australian state/territory government.
  • Since the Visa 190 requires a nomination from a state or territory government agency, you must meet additional requirements set by the respective government. You must also ensure your occupation is on the government’s skilled occupation list.
  • Some state governments require you to do an additional step to be considered for the state nomination for subclass 190. This additional step is to submit a Registration of Interest (ROI).
  • Visa 189 allows you to live, work and study in any area in Australia. Meanwhile, the Visa 190 requires you to live, work and study in the Australian state or territory that nominates you.

Things to Do While Waiting for Invitation to Lodge Skilled Working Visa Australia

Having 65 points does not guarantee that you will get the invitation immediately. While waiting for the invitation to lodge the skilled working visa Australia application, you can increase your points to improve your chances of getting the invitation.

What should you do to increase your points?

In general, you can increase your points by:

1. Taking additional English proficiency test

The minimum English requirement for a Skilled Migration Visa is Competent English, but achieving Competent English will not give you any points in your Expression of Interest (EOI) application. So, always take English proficiency tests to get the highest point. Try to reach the Proficient or Superior English level to earn points for your English proficiency. That way, you may get a higher chance of getting the invitation.

2. Taking a test on NAATI

NAATI, or National Accreditation Authority for Translator and Interpreters, is Australia’s national certification and standards organisation for translators and interpreters. You can take a test on NAATI to enhance your point. Having a CCL test with NAATI will give you additional 5 points in your EOI application.

3. Enhancing your work experience

One of the most important things to enhance your points is improving your work experience. The longer the period of your work experience, the higher your points will be.

So, continue looking for new work experience related to your nominated occupation even though you have yet to receive an invitation. You may only be able to claim this additional work experience through a skill assessment. So, depending on your nominated occupation, you must update, renew, or retake the skill assessment.
