What is the news updated about?
This was updated on 27th April of 2023. The Australian Government announced an increase in the Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold (TSMIT) from $53,900 to $70,000 starting on July 1st, 2023.
This is the first time the Australian government has changed the TSMIT in over a decade. This change shows that almost 90% of full-time jobs in Australia pay more than the current TSMIT, indicating that the current migration system is broken.
The change is expected to impact migrants significantly but may also benefit some workers in specific industries.
With those changes also, the government updated that Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) short-stream visa holders will have a direct pathway to permanent residency in Australia.
How do those changes lead into?
This was compared to a report in 2016 where changes to the salary of temporary skilled workers in Australia were proposed, and you can see the report here.
The temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold (TSMIT) is the minimum salary that employers must pay their skilled migrant worker who holds a temporary skilled migration visa. The increase in the threshold is expected to affect thousands of temporary visa holders in Australia, particularly those in lower-skilled positions.
This also aims to reduce a bit of the inconvenient things that affect the skilled worker in Australia, which will provide employers and migrants with more certainty and will help increase the skill level in their permanent skilled program.
Will these changes affect you?
