On 1 March 2019, the Australian Government announced a new Parent visa subclass 870. A temporary visa for those who wish to bring their parents to Australia. This now means that there are several different subclasses of Australia Parent visas, each with different eligibilities, and costs.
So how do you know which Australian Parent Visa is the right one for you? Below, we explore the different subclasses, and the differences between Parent Visa, to help you make an informed decision on which Parent visa is best suited for you.
Parent Visa 1 – Temporary Sponsored (Subclass 870) NEW VISA 2019
The Parent Visa 870 visa is a temporary visa which will allow the parents of Australian permanent residents or citizens to stay in Australia for a longer period of time, up to five years at a time, without having to leave the country every so often.
There is also the opportunity to apply for a second visa for another five years after a short period of stay outside of Australia between the last visa expiry date and the new application. This visa has a different process for applying than the other Parent visa subclasses and a sponsorship application must first be approved. This means the sponsor for this Parent Visa will apply first to be approved.
To be eligible to apply for this visa you must meet the following Parent Visa 870 eligibility requirements:
- Be the biological, adoptive, or step-parent of the sponsor who must be an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen.
- Be sponsored by a person who is an approved parent sponsor
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Be outside Australia (unless invited in writing to apply by the Department), for at least 90 days if the applicant holds or has previously held a Sponsored Parent (Temporary) visa
- Provide evidence of access to funds
- provide evidence of health insurance
- Must not have outstanding public health debt (unless appropriate arrangements have been made to repay the debt)
- satisfy health, character, and national security requirements.
The eligibility requirements to become Sponsor for Parent Visa 870 must meet the following criteria:
- Be aged at least 18 years of age
- Be an Australian citizen/permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen who has been usually resident in Australia for four years
- Have met any prior sponsorship obligations
- Have no debts to the Commonwealth or public health debts unless appropriate arrangements have been made for payment
- Must meet the minimum household income threshold (based on the income of the sponsor, or the combined income of the sponsor and their spouse/partner and/or another child of the parent)
- Provide police clearances for any country they have spent more than 12 months cumulatively in during the past 10 years
The cost of Parent Visa 870 is as follows:
$420 AUD for Sponsorship application fee.
$5,000 AUD for a visa of up to three years’ duration
$10,000 AUD or a visa of up to five years’ duration.
Parent Visa 2 – Contributory Parent (Migrant) Subclass 143 (permanent visa)
To apply for this permanent Parent Visa 143, you need to be sponsored by your child or another eligible sponsor in Australia. The benefits of permanent contributory parent visa 143, you can work and study in Australia, be eligible for subsidised healthcare through Medicare and the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS), be eligible to apply for certain social security payments and you may also be eligible to apply for Australia citizenship.
To be eligible for Contributory Parent Visa 143 you must:
- Be sponsored by an eligible Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen
- Meet the balance-of-family test plus our character and health requirement
- Have an Assurance of Support
The cost of this visa is from $47,455 AUD
Parent Visa 3 – Contributory Parent (Temporary) Subclass 173 (temporary visa)
This visa allows you to live in Australia for two years, Work and study in Australia and Enroll in Medicare Australia’s scheme for health-related care and expenses. You can travel to and from Australia for two years from the date the visa is granted. This visa cannot be extended or renewed.
The requirements for Contributory Parent Visa 173 you must:
- Have a child who is an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen
- Meet the balance-of-family test
- Meet all visa conditions and follow Australian law
The cost of this visa is from $31,725 AUD
Parent Visa 4 – Contributory Aged Parent (Residence) Subclass 864 (permanent visa)
This is a permanent visa for parents with children living in Australia who wish to settle permanently with their children in Australia. To apply for this visa, an applicant will need to be sponsored by their child in Australia. With the permanent contributory parent visa, you can work and study in Australia, receive subsidised healthcare through Medicare and the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) and access certain social security payments such as the pension. You may also be eligible to apply for Australia citizenship if you meet the residency criteria
To be eligible you must:
- Be in Australia, when you apply for the visa and when your application is decided
- Have an eligible child who is a settled Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen
- Be old enough to receive the age pension in Australia
The cost of this visa is from $47,455 AUD
Parent Visa 5 – Contributory Aged Parent (Temporary) Subclass 884 (temporary visa)
Contributory Aged Parent visa allows you to live in Australia for up to two years. This visa cannot be extended or renewed. If you wish to apply for permanent residency in Australia you must apply for a permanent Contributory Aged Parent Visa Subclass 864 before your temporary visa expires. To be eligible you must be older than 65 years of age for males and for women to apply for Subclass Visa 884, there are varialke age requirements. For example if you were born before 30th June 1947 you can apply at the age of 64, or if you were born between 1st July 1947 and 31st December 1948 you can apply when you are 64.5 years of age. For those born after 1st January 1949 you can apply when you turn 65.
To be eligible to apply for this visa you must:
- Have an eligible child who is a settled Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen
- Be old enough to receive the Australian aged pension
- Be in Australia, when you apply for this visa and when a decision is made
The cost of this visa is from $32,985 AUD
